Catastrophic Injury

Life Altering Accidents

Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. Catastrophic injuries are any injuries that impair a person’s mobility or cognitive abilities. Needless to say, catastrophic injuries are life altering events and require special expertise when it comes to making claims. Catastrophic injury can occur in Product Malfunction, Airline Accidents, Car accidents, Trucking Accidents, Slip and Falls, and even Dog Bites / Attacks. However, many times people suffer injuries in other ways, such as playing sports or riding on a train. We handle injuries caused by the negligence of others regardless of where they happened. Some examples of common catastrophic injuries are: Get Your Free Consultation

  • Paralysis

Paralysis is arguably one of the worse injuries one can suffer. With the complete loss of nerve and muscle function in one or more limbs, paralysis is a life changing event for not just the victim, but for their family and society. Paralysis can have a partial or total effect on the body, depending on where the damage occurred. Types are often described by the number of limbs affected.

  • Spinal Cord Injuries

Any physical trauma that crushes or compresses the vertebrae in the neck can cause irreversible damage at the cervical level of the spinal cord and below. Injuries occurring this high up will likely cause paralysis throughout the body, including both arms and legs (this condition is called quadriplegia because it affects all four limbs). Spinal cord damage in the middle back (the thoracic or lumbar area) can cause paralysis that is limited to the lower half of the body and the legs (a condition called paraplegia because it affects two limbs).

  • Amputation

Losing a limb is trauma by itself. Losing a limb due to a catastrophic accident can leave people in pain and anguish for years, making it harder for them to earn a living. Even with the right financial resources in place, limb prosthetics can cost tens of thousands of dollars—not including the time spent adjusting to using it, the hours of physical therapy, and the lost work efficiency due to using it.

  • Burns

Third and fourth-degree burns are among the most severe types a person can receive. Not only do these affect the different layers of skin, but this intense of a burn injury can also reach as far as the bones, and the surrounding muscles and fat as well. A burn like this may also damage nerves, which can cause numbness or tingling in the burn area. These burns are generally caused by prolonged time in the flames, rather than a quick encounter with a hot stove, etc.

  • Loss Of Vision / Eye

Vision is a requirement for a majority of jobs, it is vital for the ease of everyday life, and vision is even a necessary part of understanding human communication. These truths arguably make vision the most important human sense. However, eye injuries are prevalent in the everyday commotion of life.

  • Scarring & Disfigurement

While many accidents result in scars or disfigurements, there are two main categories of scars. A scar or disfigurement can either be medically reversible or irreversible depending on the nature of the injury. In either event, scarring or disfigurement is likely a life lasting injury.

  • Neurological Disorders

Among different kinds of catastrophic injuries, those to the head and neurological functioning of an individual are some of the most debilitating.

  • Blunt Force Trauma

Blunt force trauma injuries are those caused to a specific part of the body through the strong force of impact of a heavy object. These blunt force injuries are different from penetrating injuries where an object enters the body. The trauma can lead to other conditions such as concussions, contusions, fractures, or damage to internal organs.

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries

TBI range from mild to severe, depending on the force of the impact. While medical attention can alleviate some symptoms of TBI, there is little that can be done to completely reverse the adverse effects of traumatic injury to the brain.

  • Filing Insurance Claims

Insurance companies are not your friend and they are not in business to pay out claims. Quite the opposite, insurance companies often “low ball” or straight out deny legitimate claims. The other party’s insurance company may call you as soon as the next day after the accident knowing you are shocked, scared, and injured. Beware. Before talking to an insurance company after an accident, understand that anything you say or do can and will be held against you later. You are under no obligation to talk to the other party’s insurance company although they may tell you that if you don’t, they can’t pay your claim. This is a trap that the insurance company wants you to fall for so they can use it against you later. This is why it is important to talk to an attorney before talking to any insurance company or making your claims.
